Surrounded by memories

Surrounded by memories was commissioned by BrassWind Festival/Craig Farr for improviser Sarah Belle Reid with fundings from The Norwegian Cultural Fund.
It is scored for trumpet connected to modular synthesizer, organ, 2 trumpets and trumpet ensemble (8).

The overall idea behind the piece is creating a happening by bringing two very different sound worlds together. The "electronic" turmpet and the acoustic instruments: trumpets and the grand organ with all the pipes, a sound world in itself.

The idea behind the title (and the way the piece is evolving), has to do with the way we develope. From breathing (the basic of beeing alive), articulation of sound (the basis of beeing able to speak) and the singing (basic for most of the living creatures).

Without memory no art will ever be made. In "Surrounded by memories" the soloist brings this memories to us. We don't pay to much attention to the sound of the breath. We don't often think about the fact that air and articulation is the basis for every language.
The last part of the piece has to do with melody: breath, articulation and memory.
The combination of the sounds we need to exist and a long melodic line end this piece.

The solo trumpet with modular synthesizer wil sound through loudspeakers in a surround set-up.
